Over the years, I’ve seen many people set out on a healing journey, only to get sidetracked by misunderstandings, old fears, or beliefs that simply aren’t true. Healing is a deeply personal process, and no two paths are the same. But there are certain truths you need to know, along with a few misconceptions that can keep you from fully stepping into your own power.
Today, I’d like to share some common truths and myths about trauma, recovery, and forgiveness. I hope they’ll help you let go of what’s holding you back and embrace the healing that’s waiting for you.
Truth: You can’t push down your emotions forever.
Suppressing your feelings is like trying to hold a beach ball underwater. No matter how strong you are and how hard you try, that ball is going to pop up—and when it does, it will splash all over you and the people around you. The only way through is to process what you’re feeling, release it in a healthy way, and allow yourself to move forward.
Myth: Reiki is the only energy healing modality.
Reiki is powerful, but it’s just one path. Spiritual healing can take many forms, like guided meditation, chakra balancing, mediumship, intuitive work, sound healing, and more. Your soul might resonate with one, or with a combination of different approaches.
Truth: Highly sensitive people must protect their own energy first.
If you’re an empath or intuitive, your energy is like a battery that needs to stay charged. Helping others while running on empty is a recipe for burnout. Think of it as the spiritual version of putting on your own oxygen mask before helping others.
Myth: Healing means you’ll never feel pain again.
Pain is part of being human. Healing doesn’t erase it, but it does change how you hold it. With the right tools, pain becomes something you can move through instead of something that keeps you stuck.
Truth: Your body often knows something is wrong before your mind does.
That tightness in your shoulders, the knot in your stomach, the sudden wave of fatigue or even feeling restless around a certain person, all can all be signs that your energy needs attention. Learn to listen to what your body is telling you. Your self-awareness is one of your greatest healing allies.
Myth: You have to relive your trauma to heal it.
Fear of revisiting a painful event keeps some people stuck in the past. While facing the truth of your experiences is important, healing doesn’t mean ripping open every wound. There are gentle, loving ways to release pain without retraumatizing yourself.
Truth: Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs happen in stillness.
When you stop pushing, stop forcing, and allow yourself to sit quietly, Spirit can finally get a word in. That’s often when clarity, peace, and profound shifts happen.
Truth: Forgiving someone doesn’t mean letting them off the hook.
Forgiveness is often misunderstood. It’s not about saying what happened was “okay” or pretending it didn’t matter. Forgiveness is about freeing yourself from carrying that heavy energy day after day. You can forgive and still keep strong, healthy boundaries.
