Do you spend most of your life “in the weeds” slogging through mundane tasks and daily challenges but not getting any closer to your real goals? You might be so caught up in simply getting through the day that you lose track of what you truly desire – and forget how wonderful life can be.
Many of my students come to me seeking guidance on this very issue, which is why I created the 28 Days of Total Transformation online course. Taking courses, attending lectures, and reading spiritual books makes you more aware and connected to another powerful resource that’s available to you all day, every day – your higher self.
You have an amazing teacher right inside of you – who knows your entire history, understands your very essence, has no personal agenda and wants only what’s best for you! The higher self, or the higher aspects of your soul, is the spirit part of you that is said to ‘reside’ in the Ether (the non-physical realm). It’s your Divine spark. This part of you helps you to keep on track with your Life’s purpose and in touch with your passion and joy.
The secret to accessing your higher self comes down to three things – mindfulness, awareness and a major shift in perspective! Let me share an experience that will help illustrate this. Right now I’m sitting in my hotel room in Houston Texas. I’m on the 17th floor, and as I look out the window, I can see the entire city spread out below. It reminds me of an experience I had when I visited the Empire State Building many years ago.
As a young boy gazing at the skyline of the city, I was always drawn to the majestic spire of the Empire State Building. It looked magical, and I couldn’t believe it when I learned that my family was taking a day trip and going to the very top of it!
As we rode the crowded subway I could barely contain my excitement, but when we got there and lined up for the elevator ride to the top, I felt a little overwhelmed. I was small, and struggled to hang onto my mother in the crowd of large adults, all pushing and jostling. The elevator was even worse, and I could barely breathe as too many people squeezed into the small space. My stomach lurched and I clutched my mother’s hand. We rose higher and higher.
Finally the doors opened and we were at the observation deck! I ran to the railing and looked out. The whole city was spread out before me and it was as if I had never seen it before. I was mesmerized by the pattern of the streets and the city blocks, laid out in an orderly grid. The people and cars that seemed so threatening when I was walking among them seemed like colorful toys. I was struck by the quiet, in contrast to the noise in the street. I could see the sky and the clouds above me, and the air was clean and healing as the breeze caressed my face. My whole perspective shifted. I didn’t want to leave, but eventually my mother coaxed me to leave my spot at the railing.
The interesting thing was that my time on the observation deck left an indelible stamp on me. I never saw the city in the same way again, and when I felt crowded and pushed on the crowd below, or intimidated by the noise and the bustle of the streets, my mind would transport me I’d remember how it felt to be high above everything.
My experience viewing the city from a high vantage point is a perfect analogy for what happens when you connect with your higher self. Suddenly the noise of every day life fades, and people and events that worry or intimidate you seem small and manageable. Most importantly, you can see patterns and pathways that were invisible to you before with total clarity!
Your higher self is there for you. To connect you just have to raise your consciousness and live mindfully in this moment – the right now. That simple act of mindfulness and awareness is the most important step you can take toward making the right decisions and living the life of your dreams.
