Healing the Child Within

This weekend, I was taking a walk on the beach with some friends when I noticed a group of young children playing in the sand. I was struck by the pure, love energy emanating from these perfect little souls, and it got me to thinking about how wonderful it would be to keep our childlike innocence forever!

But unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way.

Like the little ones on the beach, we all arrive as pure, loving, open-minded souls, excited to start a brand new “class” in the schoolhouse we call Earth. We’re thrilled to have new opportunities to give and receive love, to learn the lessons we need to grow, and to ultimately leave the world a better place.

When we’re born into the physical world, we measure everything by where we just came from – the spiritual dimensions – but it doesn’t take long to realize we are now somewhere very different! Naturally, we look at the adults around us for the “rules” to play the game. That’s where we can encounter problems.

Some of us are fortunate to be born into loving homes, with adults who nurture and support us. Unfortunately, others are born into dysfunctional families. Putting an innocent child in an environment where they are mistreated, ignored, or judged is like leaving a garden to wilt without water. The neglect can be difficult to reverse.

As an adult, you might still be experiencing the effects of childhood trauma – and not knowing why. Once you understand the source of your problem, you can take steps to heal your inner child, and transform your adult life.

Here are some signs that your inner child needs healing:

  • You worry too much about the opinions of others instead of trusting your own instincts.
  • You put up walls to protect yourself, but those walls prevent you from enjoying fulfilling relationships.
  • You’re ashamed of expressing “childlike” emotions like fear or anger.
  • You’re a people-pleaser and tend to avoid conflict at all costs.
  • You often feel sad and empty, even when everything in your life is going okay.
  • You’re prone to addiction.

Here’s one of my favorite exercises to help your inner child to heal – and thrive:

Sit down quietly in a comfortable place where you won’t be interrupted. Take a few deep breaths.

Now, go back in your mind to when you were a child and had a happy experience. This could possibly be a birthday party, a holiday, or a vacation with your family. Close your eyes and stay with the memory for about two minutes. As you do this, attempt to bring yourself fully into the experience emotionally and mindfully. Be aware of how great you felt and which (if any) adults in the space treated you lovingly.

Now, after two minutes, slowly progress yourself forward to a time in your young life that was bad. Become aware of how you felt. Did YOU feel responsible? Were you told you were to blame? Did an adult act out on you? Were you led to believe you had to be a certain way? See the experience for what it was – fully.

Open your eyes, and ask yourself, how might this experience be impacting you today? Trust your intuition and write down everything that comes to mind.

As you relive these experiences, the little girl or boy inside might be afraid or uncomfortable. You might feel like you want to stop and do something else to escape your thoughts. Stick with it! As you relive what happened now with adult eyes, you will begin to see, that it had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with YOU. So now, you can take away ALL OF THAT BLAME AND ANGER. Especially if the adult who you looked up to was in some way mentally, physically, emotionally, or spiritually hurting you.

Remind yourself that you as a young child represented a freedom that that adult would never have again and in some instances could be jealous or envious not to have that chance again.

Now, any time you’re not feeling happy or at peace, communicate with your child within and assure him or her that they did their job. They are now free to feel whatever is coming to the surface, to do what they dream, and to be who they truly are. Once we take the time to bring awareness, understanding, and love to our little child within, we release deep blocks to healing and truly begin to live freely and fully.

Healing your inner child can have a profound effect on your adult life. You might be surprised to see how your health, happiness, and relationships change for the better when you examine the childhood fears and emotions that you’ve been pushing down all these years.

It’s remarkable, and it’s just one of the ways you can heal your mind, body, and soul.
