I often say “You can’t be happy living someone else’s life.” Your mind might do it’s best to steer you in one direction, but only your soul knows your true path to fulfillment. It might not be the path that family or friends would choose for you, but when you uncover your natural talents and use them in your everyday life, you will experience a flow and ease that will reflect on everything you do!
I’m a perfect example. I moved to California with the goal of becoming a screenwriter, but my life took a dramatic turn when I re-discovered the paranormal ability I’d had since I was a boy. Breaking into the screenwriting world had been a frustrating uphill battle, but as soon as I accepted and started to nurture my psychic and mediumistic gifts, everything changed.
I was able to combine my soul gift of mediumship with my earthly abilities as a writer, teacher, actor, and yes, even screenwriter, and just like that, I found myself “in the zone.” Three decades, a dozen books, and countless live and televised appearances later, I’m still sharing the light of spirit with the world, and loving every minute of it!
How do you uncover your unique calling? It’s easy to get so caught up juggling daily tasks and obligations that you miss out on what matters most to you. I invite you to put your to-do list aside and take the first step toward discovering your true purpose – the gift you were put on this earth to share!
Here’s a three-step plan to get you started:
1) Step into the stillness.
Within your soul is the wisdom of countless lifetimes, but to hear its quiet voice you must first step into the stillness. Years ago, my friend Lynn Probert shared a simple exercise with me. When I am looking inward for guidance, this meditation is where I start.
Sit comfortably, close your eyes and say into your mind “be still, be still, be still.” Focus on your breath and send out the intention “I am quiet enough to hear the voice of my soul.” Tune out the noise of the world and the chatter of your mind as you breathe in and out. Silently repeat “be still, be still” like a mantra.
When you have gone to the quiet place inside, be open to insights that come through. They act as signposts, directing you to your true path.
2) Let go of what’s holding you back.
Is the clutter of negative energy, resentment and repressed emotions hiding your natural gifts? It’s time to clear it out! If you look back on your life, it’s likely that you will see patterns of behavior that have held you back. Decide what it will take to break these patterns. Therapy, coaching, and working on yourself through courses and journaling are all useful tools that will help you clear the space so you can live your authentic life.
3) Focus on possibilities – not limitations!
Shift your perspective toward the positive. Remember that anything you put your attention to will expand. Thoughts have power! For example, if you are drawn to a career as a psychic, healer or medium you might think about all of the reasons you ‘can’t.” If you dwell on how people will judge you, the fact that you can’t afford to make a change, or that you are just “not good enough” you are actually attracting that negative energy. Instead look for positive signs and affirmations and nurture them. Get out there and experience small successes, and remind yourself of them again and again. Focus on the possibilities and have faith in the messages your soul is sending you.
What is your true gift?
You were born with the ability to do amazing things, and your special gifts hold within them the key to living the life you were sent here to live. So many students ask me “what is my true path, and what are my gifts?” To answer them, I have been working on a course with my friends at Hay House. Over a period of six weeks, I’ll be your guide, helping you to identify and strengthen your soul-gifts. I’ll be sharing more details over the next few weeks – so be sure to stay tuned!
